![]() ![]() In the morning, Lara goes to her father's company to claim her inheritance when she is presented with a puzzle box like one she used to play with as a child. Lara has spent the last seven years waiting and hoping Richard will return home, but everyone has figured he died. She tells Lara that her father's shares of his company are about to be sold off unless Lara claims them herself. Lara is bailed out by her former guardian and her father's old business partner Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas). This distracts her and causes her to run into a police car, leading to her arrest. ![]() Lara rides through the streets and narrowly evades the bikers until she spots a man on the streets that she believes to be Richard. Lara then heads to another location with some friends of hers that challenge her to a "fox hunt" - Lara is supposed to carry a fox tail on the back of her bike while a team of bikers chase after her. Lara is later told by the gym's owner that she's behind on payments and he can't keep letting her show up without paying. She tries her hardest against her opponent but must ultimately tap out. We jump to the present where Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) is at a boxing gym somewhere in London, England. ![]() Richard plans to learn more about Himiko's secrets, but he fears leaving his daughter behind. Her generals overthrew her and buried her body on the island of Yamatai to prevent her evil from spreading. The story goes that she held power over life and death, and one touch from her was enough to kill anyone. The film opens with the voice of Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West) telling the legend of an ancient sorceress named Himiko. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name "tomb raider". Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who, against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith, and inherently stubborn spirit, must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. But her mission will not be an easy one just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone. The film will also star Dominic West as Croft’s long-lost father, Lord Richard Croft. Tomb Raider, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug ( The Wave), will be loosely based on the 2013 Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix video game of the same name, which rebooted Croft’s story by focusing on her early years as she was only 21 and determined to solve the puzzle of her father’s researches and mysterious death. “She made me embarrassed to take my shirt off,” says her co-star Walton Goggins. Stunt after stunt, the actress was put through numerous far-from-pleasant filming conditions, from being continuously splashed with icy water to jumping off cliffs, trees, ladders, and many other not-very-stable set parts.īut most importantly, to take her transformation to the next level, Vikander followed a rigorous muscle building workout routine to bring strength and robustness to her character. “Alicia is a beast,” exclaims actor Daniel Wu in the making-of. Playing the smart and athletic ’90s popular protagonist/sex symbol as she grows into a kickass adventurer should have represented quite a challenge for anyone, but Vikander actually makes the performance look like something she was born to do. “I’ve been dreaming since I was a kid to be part of a big action adventure, to push myself,” says Vikander in the behind-the-scenes video, above, unveiling how she became Lara Croft. Fierce and in tip-top shape, the 28-year-old Swedish actress has been training very hard to portray the younger version of Lara Croft in the much-loved video game character’s highly anticipated origin movie, Tomb Raider. She’s certainly no Angelina Jolie, but Alicia Vikander has a lot more stunning attributes to make up for it. ![]()
